Klondike Solitaire vs. Spider Solitaire

Are you someone who finds it difficult to distinguish between different types of solitaire card games? Don’t worry! We are here today to help you understand the differences and similarities between two of the most popular variants of solitaire: klondike solitaire and spider solitaire.

Klondike is so popular that the word solitaire is often used as a synonym of klondike itself. In the UK, the game is also known as patience. Spider is often called the King of Solitaires because of its unusual rules. Both klondike solitaire and spider solitaire have all the standard elements of classic solitaire: a foundation pile for each suit, a tableau, a stockpile, and a waste pile.

Read on to learn about the differences between these two unique versions of solitaire.

1. Number of cards and the game set-up

Klondike solitaire is played with a 52-card deck. There are seven tableau columns, with one card in the first column, two in the second one, and so on.

In spider solitaire, there are two standard card decks, consisting of 104 cards in total. Of these, 54 cards are dealt into 10 tableau columns. The first four tableau columns have 6 cards each. The remaining ones have 5 cards each. In both the variants, only the top card remains face up in each tableau column.

2. Number of suits

In klondike solitaire, all four suits of a card deck are used. In spider solitaire, the number of suits played varies according to the difficulty level. You can choose to play a beginner, intermediate or expert level, which will have one, two and three suits respectively.

3. Objective

To win a game of klondike, you have to build up four stacks of cards according to suit sequentially, starting with an ace and ending with a king, on each of the four foundation piles.

In spider solitaire, you have to pile up 13 cards of a suit sequentially, starting with an ace and ending with a king. When you assemble a full suit of 13 cards on the tableau, you remove them from the game. You win the game when you have played out all the cards.

4. Building piles on the tableau

In both the games, you have to rearrange the cards in the tableau in descending order. In klondike solitaire, the sequencing of the cards is alternated between red and black suits. For instance, you can move the 5 of spades only onto the 6 of hearts or diamonds. However, in spider solitaire, cards are arranged sequentially only if they belong to the same suit. For example, you can move the 5 of spades only onto the 6 of spades.

5. Stockpile

In the case of klondike solitaire, you get only one card at a time from the stockpile when you run out of moves to make.  In spider solitaire, drawing from the stockpile means dealing a single card to each column in the tableau. Though this move provides more cards to deal with, it can also break the already set sequences.

Both these games allow you to utilize your skills while having entertainment.
